the DeInstaller for your user-startup
DISCLAIMER
THE AUTHOR IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE, DATA LOSS
OR WHATEVER THIS PROGRAM MAY CAUSE. THIS PROGRAM MAY BE
PUT ON NON-PROFIT CDS SUCH AS THE MEETING PEARLS SERIES
OR SIMILAR. COMMERCIAL DISTRIBUTION ON FLOPPY DISKS OF
ANY TYPE IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.
DISTRIBUTION
DInst is distributed as mailware. If you like DInst or
think you have found out new amazing features or just
want to report it has blown up your machine ;-) please
mail me. (see below for my addy)
INTRODUCTION
Perhaps you've had a look at your s:user-startup before.
Well, a lot of programs plug their assigns and other
stuff there, even if you deleted the belonging program
years ago.
Programs that install using the Installer tool from
Commodore (or AT or whatever ;-) add things to the user
startup with two marker which look similar to this:
;BEGIN blabla
commands
.
.
.
;END blabla
where blabla is the name of the tool.
Until now this had no real sense, as a DeInstaller for
such additions was missing.
So here is DInst, a user-startup manager that seeks through
the file and looks for ;BEGIN and ;END lines and puts them
all in a nice user interface.
USAGE
Just double click on the DInst icon. A MUI pops up and shows
DInst's search results.
There are two lists and one button. The left list contains
all the programs that have made an addition to your user-
startup. If you click on one, the addition itself will be
shown in the right window to give a quick overview of what
it is or was used for.
If you think some entry is just wasting around do a click
on the "Remove" button. A requester will show up to confirm
your action.
Please think twice before removing ANY entry of your user-
startup. If you are not sure what an addition does, leave
it at its place. In bad cases your machine won't boot up
correctly.
NOTES
As far as I know the removal process is working quite correct
now, but there is still a small risk DInst will trash some
characters before and after the addition to remove.
To ensure safety DInst *always* keeps a backup of your
user-startup called s:autoexec.bak :-)
You'll be warned if something went wrong with backing up.
DInst does a backup when it's initialized, not when it does a
removal process.
Also remember: DInst only removes additions to your user-
startup, *NOT* the program packages themselves. (This is the
only thing it can do, as it is not possible to resolve
an addition to all the belonging files and directories)
PERSONAL
In fact, this tool was written out of curiosity :)
I had something like DInst in mind for quite some weeks, but
couldn't bring to do it. Well, now I did it, and it seems to
work ok. MUI does a very good job, perhaps I should call it
"The only perfect UnInstaller", let it do a DELTREE C:\WINDOWS
and sell it for $100 at computer discounters );-)
